We all know how daunting the postpartum prep can be, especially when it’s your first baby. I don’t know about you, but I’m a planner and an over packer. I like to have everything we could possibly need and maybe a few extra. So with this lovely over packing talent of mine, I have created a list of my top favorite postpartum items; including a few I discovered later on that I will definitely have for baby number two!
My Top 10 PP Must Haves!
All of these items can be found on the beloved AMAZON. Some of which are affiliate links.
So to start things off and dive head first into the PP pool of products, are the ever comfortable Always Discreet Boutique undies! These little gems were a godsend. Don’t get me wrong, they are totally a ‘luxury’ item and completely optional to purchase. But, if you are anything like me, when I’m feeling vulnerable & in an uncomfortable & new situation; all I want is comfort. And these bring just that! Most hospitals will provide you a makeshift diaper that is all fine and dandy on day one, but let’s be honest here, they are anything but glamorous. The reason I am giving the well deserved praise to the Always Discreet undies, is because I did in fact have to buy another brand out of desperation and they were anything but comfortable. Not to get graphic, but I had to endure more stitches down under than one would like to think about. The Always Discreet brand was soft and stretchy and felt like a cloud between my legs.
Okay moving on.
If you are having or planning on having a vaginal birth where there is pushing of any kind, listen up. Ice pack!! You want a designated ice pack for those lady bits. The amount of pressure that goes on down there; and not to mention the baby’s entire body making its arrival down there; you need ice for many days to help with swelling. My nurses were quite crafty and made me ice packs out of wet, then frozen diapers. These were great but not conducive to moving around and were not the most comfortable long term. So, I present to you the Frida Mom Instant Ice Maxi Pads. Now this wasn’t an item I was originally prepared with and will definitely have on hand for the next go round. But nonetheless I feel this to be a genius item and I love all other Freda Mom Products, so I have faith this one will live up to my standards as well!
This was such a game changer for me. Again, a luxury item I know (Our hospital did give us a squirt bottle, but it was just that; A Squirt Bottle). The Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle, was my BFF for after using the restroom and while taking a shower. When you are recovering from delivering a baby out of your lady bits, you want NOTHING to be touching you there. Not to mention, if you have a few stitches. The design of this bottle neck helps you successfully spray water to clean and freshen up your down stairs and makes the dare I say, itch you can’t scratch from healing stitches, scratchable (with water that is).
These little pads are like a breath of fresh air to your healing who-ha! I interchanged these on the regular and simply lined two of them inside of my Always Discreet undies. Not only do these help you heal and have quite the cooling effect, they are also great if you are suffering from hemorrhoids do to pushing and constipation.
This spray became a big part of my undercarriage routine! I had a bottle in the main floor bathroom and my master bath. This spray is full of healing and soothing botanicals that just make you feel like you again. Free of all the chemicals and full of natural oils and extracts to have you feeling fresh and clean!
This is magic. Again, another luxury item. But in my opinion it’s an essential one. This product being one with the earth, made me feel confident putting it on my body and even more confident knowing my new born baby could safely ingest it. It has such a thick consistency that fully covers, protects and heals those aching nipples. This product is made of natural oils and extracts that help heal and soothe your skin and make breastfeeding for the first time a bit more bearable.
These bad boys are quite comforting especially when your baby is cluster feeding and you feel like your nipple might actually fall off. You can use them cold to help with soothing and engorgement or heat them up to encourage your let-down and relieve mastitis.
Finding your favorite water bottle is key! I love this one because of its no leak straw, silicone grip and easy to clean glass body. I also find that when I drink out of straws, I drink much more water!
This little gem of a basket is great for storing all of your PP personal car items in the bathroom AND also great for easy bedside grab and go for those middle of the night diaper changes.
This was a heavy hitter for my postpartum care kit. If you’re anything like me and pushed for just shy of 3 hours, the pressure built up in your behind is less than desirable. Also, when you have an epidural, it can make that first bowel movement have a special kind of feeling. Having a stool softener definitely brings a little bit of ease to the situation.
In summary, I could go on and on about the other products you may want or need, like nursing bras/pads, comfy sweatshirts etc. But these were my absolute top ten favorites and personal must haves that made my healing experience simply, better!
Happy Healing Mamas!
